4 tips for picking a natural deodorant

Hi! Happy almost Feb!

One summer two years ago, my childhood friend “E” called me while she was at work. Her voice was slightly muffled, as she used her low work voice. You know, the one people use when they call into the radio station while they’re at work, hoping to win something. That voice, except there was a sense of urgency in her voice…

She and I had had the talk before, you know the one about natural products, because I somehow became that friend everyone asks about healthier options, which I love btw! But I never thought she’d jump the gun!

See, “E” follows @tierragoesgreen on Instagram. If you don’t know Tierra you’re missing out on some daily nutritional jewels. See, Tierra is vegan and my friend said she got the idea from Tierra’s Instagram to use citrus like a slice of lemon or lime to smear on her pits like you would deodorant.

Yes, My carnivorous friend quit her usually deodorant cold turkey and was mildly troubled she wasn’t smelling as fresh as she hoped. Fortunately for her, it was Friday and not a lot of folks were at work.

But unfortunately for her, she had that one co-worker who loved to hover over her, so she resorted to wearing her jacket the entire workday. I hope the air was at a ridiculously low temperature.

Here’s the thing; it’s not just deo! If you have any skin sensitivities, want to reduce the number of toxins entering your body, or if you’ve ever had a cyst under your armpit (like me), I’m going to share a few things I look for when I choose a natural deodorant that isn’t a lemon or a lime.

4 Tips to Help you Pick a Natural Deodorant

  1. Ingredients that are familiar – Look for real ingredients, like cocoa butter, coconut oil, and essential oils.
  2. Antiperspirants – Avoid them! Why? Your body needs to perspire. Preventing it from doing so can cause cysts, and they’re painful! I know you’re worried about being stinky, but if you’re eating a good diet and detoxing your pits, you’ll be fine!
  3. Ingredients to avoid – Aluminum, parabens, propylene glycol (antifreeze), Triclosan and Phthalates – They’re shitty. These 5 ingredients are linked to breast cancer and prostate cancer; they may increase the risk of Alzheimer’s. Not all symptoms happen overnight. They can cause hormonal imbalance, and you get organ toxicity. Please research them in-depth; this is just the tip of the iceberg. There are more toxic ingredients, but I think you’ve got the gist of avoiding chemicals.
  4. Baking soda – Some people react to this, and I think it’s because of your body’s toxins reacting to it. If your pits are turning red, you might want to detox with a clay mask a few times a week. You can also switch to a deodorant that doesn’t contain baking soda.

It’s a new year, and I know you have your plans and vision boards in motion, but I’m curious about what wellness and healthy living things you hope to make a part of your life. Personal items are always a great place to start. So, if you’ve been thinking about switching to something natural, now’s a good time to let go of your old faith with the yucky chemicals and explore the world of natural deodorants!

A few of my healthy living and wellness plans include making less trash and cooking more meals, less waste and more reusable bags, staying hydrated, and writing every day, even if it’s just a sentence. Also, to enjoy life and use products I believe in! I first heard of Lone deodorant from heyfranhey, and it’s my favorite of all the natural deodorants I’ve tried! I just love their sweet lavender scent!

So tell me, what are your wellness and healthy living goals for this year?
