Nine tips on how to maintain healthy skin

When I was 13, I convinced my mother to buy the Clean & Clear® facial skincare system. All the other girls in my class were using it, so it seemed right that this impressionable teen followed suit. That meant waking up just a bit earlier in the morning, but that got old because this routine was cutting into my “leave the house by 6:32 am so that I can arrive at the same time as *Milo and walk into school with him” time.

C’mon, I’m not the only person who did that, right?

Milo was Serbian and just as tall—or just as short—as I was. Whichever way you want to look at it. He had olive skin, his hair was cut into a long bob circa Jennifer Anniston on “Friends” and his brows, sans unibrow, were enviously thick!

I preferred those mornings when we walked in together mainly because his lesser other crush got mad when she saw us together. Oh, to be a teenager…

Eventually, I ditched those products out of laziness and decided that my regular soap was just fine.

I’m not a makeup type of person, mainly out of laziness, but I do make the exception for special events! On occasion when I’ve gotten my makeup done, I’ve been told that I had beautiful but dry skin and cringed when asked what I use on my face.

Soap…

After hearing this for years, I decided it was time for me to adopt a skincare regiment—something quick with good ingredients. I figured that if I’m going to get my skin healthy, then I should be invested in the ingredients, not just used a skincare line because it’s popular. So, I did what many millennials do: I headed to Amazon to read reviews by strangers to figure out what I should use.

In the end, I settled on the Christina Moss Naturals® facial cleanser and moisturizer, and for my toner, I got Thayers® Witch Hazel, which has no alcohol. I use Truskin Naturals® vitamin C serum at night, a few times a week, and during winter I like to add a thin layer of Radha rosehip oil® before I go to bed.

Here are nine tips on how to maintain healthy skin

  1. When you find products that work for your face, keep them.
  2. If you’re drying out in the winter, add some more moisture. My go-to is rosehip oil.
  3. Use oils such as almond oil, jojoba, and rosehip to help remove makeup (always spot test first).
  4. Don’t sleep with makeup on.
  5. Wash your face as soon as you can after working out.
  6. Wash your face twice a day.
  7. Do a face mask once a week.
  8. Eat healthy, mayne. *Terrence Howard voice* If your diet isn’t where it could be, that might be the reason your face is breaking out.
  9. Drink H2O.

I decided that I want to age like Sanaa Lathan, Gabrielle Union, and Winnie Mandela. No, for real. Look at Grandma Winnie’s 80th birthday picture. There is no way I’m going to have luxurious healthy skin like hers by the time I reach 80 if I’m just drying my way into having elephant skin.

I love looking in the mirror and seeing how my skin looks and feeling how smooth and soft it is. You know how I knew I picked a winner? I was Facetiming my mom in South Africa on her 3G internet, and she noticed a difference in my skin and without knowing I’d started taking care of it.

What are your must-have facial products? Let me know in the comments!

I hope this post finds you less ashy and hella moisturized.

*Milo – name changed because I don’t know if he reads this blog, and I would surely die from embarrassment if he did.
