I’m sitting on my bed thinking about what I’m going to eat for dinner. So far I’ve placed two pieces of Alaskan wild caught salmon on my kitchen counter to thaw out, and I have some leftover basil pesto marinade I made for my zoodles( zucchini noodles). As much as I love the taste of the sauce, I despise cleaning the food processor. I thought, what vegetable I could eat with the salmon?? It’s funny how I like to make sure I have veggies with every single meal. If you remember here, I avoided vegetables as much as I could as a child, now I love them. Brussels sprouts are my favorite vegetable. Within the last year, I started looking at more plant-based sources of protein!

I was reintroduced to sprouts as an adult, at my favorite place in Atlanta, Alon’s Bakery. On Sunday’s, after church, I’d stop by Alon’s, and either pick up a lamb sandwich or make a plate from the prepared foods.

Brussels sprouts are one of those vegetables that make sense. Green peas do not. This is not up for debate; I truly hated peas as a child. And it’s not like I could mix it with something else on my plate, like chicken because that would taint the taste of my chicken!

I can’t picture an adult sitting at their desk thinking, “Girl, I can’t wait to go home and F*ck up a bowl of peas.” Show me that person!

Whenever I make chicken pot pie you can bet there won’t be a single round green abomination in my individualized personal servings. I can’t even “no shade” peas because I’m standing under a huge oak tree shading to the point of no return. Okay, I used to shade peas till they redeemed and rebranded themselves. Let me explain.

A few years ago I went on Amazon and found a popular brand of protein powder. It had great reviews, the taste wasn’t bad and my muscles were leaning out so nicely! I added it to my morning smoothie with no issues. Most times when I go to the gym I like to pack a serving of protein so I can mix it with water and drink my shake on the way home. Here’s the thing, when I drank the protein JUST with water it made me feel sick to my stomach and I didn’t understand why. I’d like to take this moment to say just because something looks like it’s working doesn’t mean it’s good for you! Amen? Amen…

It wasn’t till I started following the blood type diet, paged my way through the thick book and looked up my blood type did I realize that my body is sensitive to WHEY! The stuff little Ms. Muffet was throwing back when she sat on the tuffet! Once that container ended (I wasn’t going to waste it) I switched to a plant based protein, and guess what the main ingredient is… Peas. Tuh!

I know they’re so many different types of protein, and a lot of them have ingredients I can’t pronounce, mainly because they’re chemicals. My philosophy on food is it to keep it as simple as possible and fuel my body with real stuff as much as I can. Because I’m so accident prone, I feel like my body is in a constant state of healing. I have a scar on my wrist from opening the fridge. No really, I opened the door and somehow started bleeding. Let me be honest, peas still don’t taste all that great but fortunately, you can flavor up your smoothies with a few ingredients. So, voila! Here is a recipe for a smoothie I love to make and it’s pretty good.

Blu’s Blueberry Smoothie

  1. Spinach
  2. frozen banana
  3. A handful of blueberries
  4. A few chunks of frozen mango
  5. Almond milk and/or spring water
  6. Pea protein

Throw them in your Nutri-bullet or blender and you have a breakfast smoothie! I don’t like to eat a heavy meal first thing in the morning so this is perfect for me.

I get asked a lot how stuff tastes and I can assure you with this mixture you won’t taste the peas. Right now I’m loving Orgain Organic Plant-based protein Powder, you can get it here, in different flavors. After I workout I use pea protein from one of my fav grocery stores, Trader Joes!

I know you’re probably wondering why my smoothie doesn’t look more purple.

See, what had happened was….

I made the smoothie first thing in the morning and added ground flaxseed. The smoothie sat in the fridge for about an hour before I dashed out of the house to go meet up with Tammii to take these pics. Needless to say, the flaxseed infiltrated my lovely purple smoothie! I just wanted to keep it real with y’all. Plus, there was no way I was going to waste this smoothie!

    I have to try this! I’ve been on the hunt for a good plant based protein that doesn’t cost to much $$$ (that shit can get crazy). That smoothie recipe sounds d-lish! Also, I love the way you write. You write how I can only imagine is the way you talk… I love that in a writer. <3

    I never knew about pea protein. But I feel you on the peas…. I can’t! But now I could definitely reap the benefits of peas without that nasty taste and texture by using this them in a protein shake.💕

    Yummy! I’m a huge fan of smoothies. My favorite is strawberries and peach with a little bit of Greek yogurt and honey. I was recently introduced to sprouts and I absolutely love them! I put them on my tuna sandwiches and use them as a base for my salads. They’re amazing to eat, plus they have amazing health benefits! Thanks for sharing. I love eating healthy!

    I’ve been a vegetarian for about 8 years now and I’m always trying to find new creative ways to get protein! I love smoothies but I’m scared to buy a huge tub of protein and end up hating it lol! I might have to try that pea protein stuff!

      Once you mix it in the smoothie you won’t taste it. It’s not a terrible taste, but it does take some time getting used to 🙂

    I don’t cut back on meat since I’m not a big meat eater in the first place. Meat probably comprises about 10% of my diet. I rarely make smoothies because I prefer munching on whole fruits and vegetables but, on the occasion that I do prepare one, I usually put 1 sweet fruit, 1 low-calorie fruit like grapefruits or cranberries, spirulina, chia, hemp, coconut milk, matcha, and cacao nibs. 🙂
