six benefits of drinking lemon water in the morning

lemon for lemon water

Growing up my mom was a stickler for making sure I finished everything off of my plate before doing anything. I used to hate coming home after school because like any normal kid, I hated vegetables. But your girl got smart. I signed up for any and every possible afternoon activity so I could stay on after school. I took knitting for Heaven’s sake! This meant my lunch would consist of Simba chips (a South African potato chip brand), a sandwich and Fanta orange. Would my mother really send me to school with spinach? Of course not!

When my mother moved to South Africa for work I was left in the hands of my grandfather. The benefits of being raised by a man are eating and drinking whatever you want. The downfalls of being raised by a man are eating and drinking whatever you want. It wasn’t until the 9th grade when my best friend Natasha transferred to my high school did I start doing the water thing. Every single day she had a liter of water with her. I don’t remember growing up particularly parched, but I decided this was something I was gonna do.

I’m assuming at this point in my life my body was made up of 75% Fanta orange. I didn’t know how to drink this flavorless beverage so I decided I would consume an entire chilled liter in one sitting. My reasoning being, if I got that out of the way I wouldn’t have to think of water till the afternoon or so.

I don’t really have to tell you this was a bad idea because I threw up all that H20.

My relationship with water has since changed. If I don’t start my day off with a glass of room temperature alkaline water with lemon, I feel like something is off.

Why I drink lemon water first thing in the morning

  1. Lemon water is high in vitamin C so it boosts your immune system.
  2. It wakes up your digestive system and stimulates your liver to produce bile.
  3. It alkalizes your body. When you start feeling crappy, it’s because your body’s pH is off.
  4. It’s a diuretic so it makes you pee and removes toxins from the blood.
  5. It rehydrates the body. You’ve been asleep for hours and need water, Bad.
  6. Your skin will look so much better (Have you seen my skin lately on Instastories? Glowing!)

Unless an alcoholic beverage such as Henny is present, I barely drink soda, and the only juice I buy is cold pressed, and that’s when I’m too lazy to juice for myself.

I used to think drinking 2L of water a day was enough. To be honest, I don’t think that’s conducive to our lifestyles anymore. There’s just too much thirst out there guys. On a “bad” day I drink 3L on a great day I drink over a gallon!

I took that “L” literally years ago so I could tell just how much drinking water, especially with lemons, is good for you.

Be better than me. Drink your water.

Do you drink your water straight or do you infuse it with any fruits or herbs?

Best,

P.s. – If you don’t feel like cutting and squeezing lemons you can do what I do, and purchase a bottle of lemon juice usefully located in the juice aisle. You’re welcome!

P.s.s – How awesome do the singular lemon pics look?! Shot by Tammii and edited by myself. I love that she gets my vision for my pics just like she did here. She’s sweet, funny and easy to work with!

My addiction was soooo bad! I was never really one for candy, I just wanted soda. I would go to bed with a glass of Fanta, too. Smh.

I normally just drink my water without anything in it . I’m late to the room temperature wave, but I guess I’m adjusted now , lol. That’s a great tip to just keep the juice in a bottle cause I was sitting here thinking ” Lord I have to squeeze lemons every day in addition to smoothies and fasted cardio ?!” And the pics look great !

I can’t do cold water at all! I’m the one at the restaurant asking for room temperature water. And after hearing how slimy the ice machine are, I’m good on that!

I’ve always heard that lemon juice is the best thing to drink first thing in the morning. I try to keep lemons around the house, but I rarely do this. Thanks for the reminder!

I’ve heard mixed things about lemon water. Some say it has tons of benefits others say it doesn’t do much more than just drinking water, however, if it gets you to hydrate the lemon certainly doesn’t hurt. I’m not sure which is true but I personally enjoy lemon water all day long!

Just recently I visited a certified nutritionist to help me switch to healthier eating and she suggested lemon water in the morning for the exact same reasons. In fact, I have been alternatively drinking lemon water and aloe juice for the past one month and I can already notice a difference.

I’ve drank lemon water on a morning for some time now. I also like it hot too. Occassionally I may add some strawberries to mix it up a little.

Good post. Lemon is almost used in every thing in India. I mean when it comes to food, cooking, drinks etc. Yes, like you have said it is very healthy and good for our body but never drink lemon juice empty stomach.

Why shouldn’t you drink it on an empty stomach? Lemon water alkalizes the body.

Drinking a beverage made from lemon juice and hot water won’t suddenly make you drop pounds, but it’s a tool that might make a difference. Lemon juice naturally contains substances that are associated with weight loss. If you include lemon pulp in the beverage, you’ll add pectin, which helps you feel full. But the most important way this drink contributes to weight loss is when it replaces other high-calorie beverages.
