Growing up my mom was a stickler for making sure I finished everything off of my plate before doing anything. I used to hate coming home after school because like any normal kid, I hated vegetables. But your girl got smart. I signed up for any and every possible afternoon activity so I could stay on after school. I took knitting for Heaven’s sake! This meant my lunch would consist of Simba chips (a South African potato chip brand), a sandwich and Fanta orange. Would my mother really send me to school with spinach? Of course not!
When my mother moved to South Africa for work I was left in the hands of my grandfather. The benefits of being raised by a man are eating and drinking whatever you want. The downfalls of being raised by a man are eating and drinking whatever you want. It wasn’t until the 9th grade when my best friend Natasha transferred to my high school did I start doing the water thing. Every single day she had a liter of water with her. I don’t remember growing up particularly parched, but I decided this was something I was gonna do.
I’m assuming at this point in my life my body was made up of 75% Fanta orange. I didn’t know how to drink this flavorless beverage so I decided I would consume an entire chilled liter in one sitting. My reasoning being, if I got that out of the way I wouldn’t have to think of water till the afternoon or so.
I don’t really have to tell you this was a bad idea because I threw up all that H20.
My relationship with water has since changed. If I don’t start my day off with a glass of room temperature alkaline water with lemon, I feel like something is off.
Why I drink lemon water first thing in the morning
- Lemon water is high in vitamin C so it boosts your immune system.
- It wakes up your digestive system and stimulates your liver to produce bile.
- It alkalizes your body. When you start feeling crappy, it’s because your body’s pH is off.
- It’s a diuretic so it makes you pee and removes toxins from the blood.
- It rehydrates the body. You’ve been asleep for hours and need water, Bad.
- Your skin will look so much better (Have you seen my skin lately on Instastories? Glowing!)
Unless an alcoholic beverage such as Henny is present, I barely drink soda, and the only juice I buy is cold pressed, and that’s when I’m too lazy to juice for myself.
I used to think drinking 2L of water a day was enough. To be honest, I don’t think that’s conducive to our lifestyles anymore. There’s just too much thirst out there guys. On a “bad” day I drink 3L on a great day I drink over a gallon!
I took that “L” literally years ago so I could tell just how much drinking water, especially with lemons, is good for you.
Be better than me. Drink your water.
