Summer Reading: An American Marriage by Tayari Jones

Despite the range in melanin, Barbie’s were my thing. I loved Ken and Barbie’s intense storylines, consisting of an evil sister, several attempts at the family fortune, and a life on the run in a pink Mustang. Intense, I know!

Even though I was fully committed to the fruition of the storylines my cousin and I created, I still found lots of time to bury my nose in books.

In college, I quickly lost the desire to read because every professor treats their class as if you’re ONLY taking their class! *cries in rereading the same page over and over and still not retaining anything*

It took me a few years to get onto the e-reader ride because it felt lazy and the ultimate betrayal to the number of trees that had lost their lives and dedicated themselves to educating, entertaining and serving as wine glass coasters for many women in book clubs across the world.

As a millennial adult, I love receiving emails from the library that my book is ready for pick-up. However, when I’m having first world lack of patience problems, Amazon will come to my quick rescue, as is the case with Tayari Jones’ latest book. Before I’d even finished Eleanor Oliphant is Alright, I was keen to start reading this book!

An American Marriage

Newlyweds, Celestial and Roy, are the embodiment of both the American Dream and the New South. He is a young executive and she is artist on the brink of an exciting career. They are settling into the routine of their life together, when they are ripped apart by circumstances neither could have imagined. Roy is arrested and sentenced to twelve years for a crime Celestial knows he didn’t commit. Though fiercely independent, Celestial finds herself bereft and unmoored, taking comfort in Andre, her childhood friend, and best man at their wedding. As Roy’s time in prison passes, she is unable to hold on to the love that has been her center. After five years, Roy’s conviction is suddenly overturned, and he returns to Atlanta ready to resume their life together. – Tayari Jones

Listen, after reading this book I wanted to join a book club. I had so many questions and concerns. Personally, I wanted to drag all the main characters for therapy because, phew! I think they would’ve benefited from it. In all, I really enjoyed it and if you went to school at Spelman and Morehouse, you’ll find some gems in there which will make you smile, and as a black person in America, it was very relatable.

You can purchase her book here.
