A few days ago, I had to move heaven and earth to fight my red velvet cupcake craving. I quickly checked my cycle tracking app and realized, ah yes, we’re on course for PMS. Given this knowledge, I could navigate my way through the approaching cycle

Sometimes PMS comes in the form of cramps around your pelvic area, and it feels like a millennial doing the shoot dance, an Omega man “setting it owt” to Atomic Dog, or a member of the beehive doing any one of the epic #beychella dance sets on your ovary! Ouch!

It sucks when you’re just minding your own business, having a great day at work, with friends enjoying a mild turn up, and your reflection looks a little different, and you realize you’re bloated, maybe a little nauseous, and your pelvic area is throbbing. The betrayal! It be your own body…

My triggers

When I eat well, I barely notice I’m ovulating, and other times the description I just gave is in full effect. For some reason, I usually notice the aches and cramps at night. Here, I talk about my cyst issue and what the doctor recommended. I decided I didn’t want to go that route, so I created my own PMS relief starter pack, to de-escalating my angry ovary.

 1.  Water – I can’t stress this enough! If I’ve been drinking adult beverages around ovulation, I notice my ovary aches more. So, at the first sight of ovary achiness, I reach for some room temperature water. I use the “My Water” app to help me make sure I’m drinking enough water.

2.  Diffuser – Set the mood for your ovary and let her know this is a safe space. I like adding lavender essential oils to my diffuser because it helps with stress, anxiety, and headaches. (Please note that if you have pets, some essentials oils like eucalyptus and tea tree can be toxic to them!)

3.  Magnesium oil – The savior of cramps! I use a wax on wax off approach to distributing the oil around the area where I experience pain. Here, I talk about taking magnesium to help me sleep better at night.

4.  Peppermint oil – A boss ass essential oil. Peppermint oil helps to relieve pain, nausea, headaches, and migraine. Add a few drops in the magnesium oil or the area where you have discomfort.

5.  Heating pad – When the pain gets unbearable, some warmth helps dissipate the pain.

6.  Turmeric curcumin – This super-duper anti-inflammatory helps relieve pain. Regular cooking turmeric is only 2% curcumin, so it’s not potent enough. I like the curcumin with added black pepper because it helps the body absorb the turmeric, you can get it here. I also take turmeric for my knee pain.

7.  Red raspberry leaf tea – Contains fragarine, which eases cramps and tones the uterus. It also helps the liver filter out excess estrogen. I’ve also noticed my flow isn’t heavy and doesn’t last as long when I drink this during my cycle. I get mine here, it lasts a long time!

I know this seems like a tall list, but once I start making my way through the list and switch off the lights, I’m able to sleep well and wake up fine. Besides, you don’t have to do everything on the list; pick and choose what appeals to you!
